What can be made from egg trays

Let's look at some original ideas for crafts made from egg trays. Even a child can cope with them.

Garland with charming roses

To create this craft you will need:

  • One or more egg trays.
  • Glue gun.
  • New Year's garland.

Subsequence.

  1. We tear the tray with our hands into separate segments according to the cells in which the eggs were. It takes two cells to create one flower.
  2. We divide the resulting cups into four petals (you can make more). To do this, we tear the cup, but not completely. It should look like a flower. We also tear off the petals a little at an angle to imitate real ones.
  3. The box can be pre-painted in any color you like.
  4. To give the petals a natural shape, slightly moisten the edges. To do this, dip a soft-bristle brush in water and walk along the edge of the petals. It is important not to overdo the liquid, otherwise the paper will become limp and lose its shape.
  5. Use your fingers to press the relief of the petal from the inside. This creates a groove on the outside.
  6. We will fix the flowers with a glue gun. On a flower between two petals we tear the paper to the very base of the flower. We thread the garland through the slot and press the paper back. Similarly, we tear the next flower and plant it on the previous one. The garland will already pass through two flowers.
  7. The light bulb of the garland is already securely fixed, but we will additionally use glue. We apply it to the paper in the place where the garland passes and press it with our fingers for a few seconds. To make the garland more airy, it is better to leave two or three light bulbs between the flowers.
  8. When all the flowers have taken their place on the garland, decorate it with ribbons. You can use any beautiful fabric. We tie it in a knot or a bow - as you like.

VIDEO INSTRUCTION Some useful tips

  • These roses can be used to decorate a photo frame. It is better to paint the roses to match the color of the photo frame or, conversely, give them a contrasting shade and secure them with glue.
  • Roses are suitable as decoration for napkin rings or seating cards for guests at the holiday table.

Funny fish made of cardboard

Durable cardboard from an egg tray will be useful for creating an unusual fish that looks very much like a real fish.

To work you will need:

  • egg trays,
  • glue gun or glue crystal,
  • scissors,
  • pen,
  • two black peppercorns.

Subsequence.

  1. Using scissors, cut off one cell from the tray. Then we need to round the corners. To do this, draw a line with a pen along which we cut off the excess with scissors.
  2. We prepare 11-13 cells in this way.
  3. We glue the cells, inserting one into the other. You should get a body with scales.
  4. We crush one cell in half to get a tail. Using scissors, we make cuts on the tail.
  5. From one cell we make the tail part. To do this, draw a line again with a pen and cut off the sharp ends of the cell along it, as in step 1.
  6. Glue the tail part into the body. We glue the last row of scales to the tail part.
  7. Let's use one more cell. Draw a dorsal fin on it and cut it out. We will also need side fins. If it’s difficult for you to draw, use a picture of a fish and draw the fins from it.
  8. Glue on the fins and tail. Glue on the eyes - peppercorns, and draw a mouth with a pen.

Original photo frames

To create a craft you need:

  • egg trays,
  • cardboard,
  • photograph or picture,
  • pen,
  • scissors,
  • glue gun.

Subsequence.

  1. We prepare the base - for this we take rectangular cardboard. Glue a photo or image onto it. There should be space left at the edges - at least a couple of centimeters on each side.
  2. We cut the tray in the center of one of the rows with cells. Then we need to cut off the convex section of paper that separates the eggs from each other. To do this, draw a line along the outside of it with a pen, depicting a flower with petals. We cut this fragment along the line. We get a small paper flower.
  3. We cut off a fragment of a tray with two cells, cutting off the sharp corners. We cut the cells together. Inside one of them we draw a flower with four petals. The center of the flower should be at the very bottom. Let's cut it out. We get a slightly larger flower than in step 2.
  4. Glue the smaller flower into the larger one.
  5. Inside another cell we draw a circle, and in it there are lines from the edge of the circle to the center. We cut in a circle and make cuts along the lines, but without reaching the base. Glue the fragment inside the small flower.
  6. Draw petals on paper and cut them out. We cut a little around the edges so that it looks like a real leaf.
  7. Glue the resulting flower onto cardboard with a photo. We attach leaves nearby. You can glue them along the top and bottom borders of the frame, and place the flowers only in the corners.

You can also make several flowers of different sizes and place them close to each other in one corner of the frame. Another option is more flowers, but fewer leaves.

Useful ideas for home and garden

An egg container will definitely come in handy both at home and in the country.

It can be used as:

  • Bird feeders - simply pour grain into the cells and hang the improvised feeder on a string.
  • Stands for small things - coins, hairpins, jewelry.
  • A bouquet of artificial flowers - create flowers according to the first master class from our article, attach a stem to them, paint them and place them in a vase.
  • Container for growing seedlings - pour soil into the cells and plant the seeds.
  • Craft boxes - paint the tray, lay out threads, buttons, glue a soft pad to the inside of the lid for storing needles and pins.
  • Containers for storing crayons - your child will be happy to put them into compartments.

We hope that now you have no doubt that the egg tray can and should be used in the household!

Making papier-mâché from egg trays: step-by-step instructions

Egg trays are an ideal material for a papier-mâché mixture. The papier-mâché technique is in great demand not only as a way to create beautiful crafts and interior items, but also as a type of recycling of outdated newspapers and egg cartons. This skill is now very common and is used in educational institutions, including kindergartens. The created products are durable, smooth and resistant to weather conditions, so they can be placed in rooms, left outside, as an element of decor in the courtyard of a private house or garden.

The technique involves the use of two techniques - pasting a certain base with pieces of newspaper or sculpting from a special mass. In this case, egg trays are often used. By collecting them, you can make a large enough sculpture for a winter or summer garden. And all you need are egg trays, water, glue.

Such easily accessible components will help you create stylish decorative elements.

PVA is the most common option. Its advantages include ease of use and the ability to form a waterproof film on the surface of the craft. This allows you not to use varnish to cover the surface in the future and put the products outside without fear that they may become deformed.

Craftsmen often use wallpaper glue.

But for papier-mâché it should be diluted a little with water. Crafts made using such an adhesive composition will not be “afraid” of mold and mildew.

If it is not possible to purchase glue in a store, you can weld a well-known and affordable paste at home.

Using cheap components, especially egg trays, which are almost always thrown away, you can make any little things and decorate your living room, nursery, or kitchen with them. Often, with the help of this technique, craftsmen create beautiful sets for decorating the kitchen, table lamps in the form of fairy-tale characters, or Egyptian cats for decorating the living room.

Papier-mâché technique will help improve your interior

A special feature of the technique and the main key to success is the accuracy of the sculpting. One of the important factors is to let each piece of the craft dry thoroughly. In this case, it will not fall apart or change over time.

Papier-mâché master class: flowers

You can make beautiful flowers using glue and egg trays.

For this you will need:

  • 5 egg trays;
  • Water;
  • Scissors;
  • PVA glue;
  • White acrylic or gouache;
  • Thermal gun;
  • Thick wire (will serve as a stem for the flower);
  • Paints, brushes.
  • Colorless nail coating.

Painstaking work will delight you with flowers in your vase

Depending on how many flowers you plan to make, you will need a certain number of pieces of wire. There can be 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 - as many as you like. By the way, for flowers you can make a beautiful vase using the papier-mâché technique.

The adhesive composition is first prepared: the egg trays are soaked in warm water, after swelling, the water is drained and PVA or paste is added. The composition should have the consistency of not liquid, but not thick sour cream.

First of all, you need to stick the composition onto the wire. Moreover, if you plan to make a rose, you must immediately mold a stem with thorns. Leave until completely dry.

Flowers and leaves are made using the sculpting technique. They can be of different sizes, curved shapes or have smooth contours. To understand how to make them, it’s enough to remember how crafts are made from plasticine. The technique is identical.

Careful execution and adherence to instructions lead to amazing results.

All parts of the flowers are covered with white. It is better to give preference to gouache or acrylic coatings. Any paint can then be easily applied to them. After drying, the parts are painted in the appropriate colors: green for the stem, red, orange, yellow for the flowers, depending on what type of flowers is chosen.

The buds are attached to the stems with hot glue. Finally, the surfaces are torn with a colorless nail base. You can place butterflies and ladybugs on flowers.

Papier-mâché for the garden

Hedgehog. A hedgehog will look beautiful and original in a garden with flowers, and you don’t need expensive components to make it. A papier-mâché hedgehog for the garden is a wonderful decorative element. You can mold a whole family of them. The main thing is to show maximum imagination. The hedgehog is based on an ordinary light bulb, because its structure resembles a hedgehog. But, it is possible to make an animal by sculpting it from a mass of papier-mâché (egg trays, water, glue).

If the method of using the base is chosen, the light bulb is pre-lubricated with oil so that it is not difficult to remove later. Things will go faster if you have two light bulbs at hand. The composition is applied to half the base, and you immediately need to form the animal’s face and spines. After drying, the halves of the future craft are removed and glued together with “Moment”. The legs are made from adhesive.

Papier-mâché will help decorate and transform your garden

The craft is covered with acrylic and painted in the appropriate color. Eyes and nose are drawn with a marker.

Gnome. Thanks to the papier-mâché technique, craftsmen create the most interesting compositions. And if there is artistic talent, then there is the opportunity to create large sculptures for the garden, for example a gnome. Of course, it will take a lot more time to make, because street gnomes are quite voluminous sculptures. And here it is important that each part dries well for the strength and durability of the structure.

You will need:

  1. 5-liter empty plastic container (torso);
  2. Balloon or ball (head);
  3. 30-40 egg trays;
  4. Water;
  5. PVA glue or paste (about 1.5 l);
  6. Paints and brushes;
  7. White enamel;
  8. Colorless coating varnish.

Egg trays and your imagination will be a good tool for improving your decor.

The plastic container and the ball are covered with a mass of papier-mâché. After drying, the bases are removed, and the cut halves of the body and head are glued together. A mass of papier-mâché is connected to each other. The face and hands are formed from the adhesive composition. After a while - the remaining parts - headdress, fingers, legs. After drying - cheeks, nose, eyes, beard. There is nothing complicated about this, the most important thing is that the material must dry well, so there will be a lot of it and if this rule is violated, the sculpture will “float”. You can make a gnome for the garden in different poses - he can sit, stand or look out, as your imagination dictates.

After creating a rough sculpture and drying it, cover it with white enamel, decorate it with paints, and apply varnish on top.

Paste for papier-mâché from egg trays

The recipe for making the mass is quite simple. To obtain high-quality material with your own hands, it is advisable to maintain a ratio of 13-14 egg cells and 14 liters of water. It is better to crush the egg cells before placing them in warm water. The papier-mâché mass should remain in this state for at least 10 hours. Ideally – 17-18. After time, the composition is rubbed by hand until completely crushed. The water is drained through a fine sieve or cheesecloth. The paper is again placed in the container and glue is added in such an amount that a homogeneous mass is obtained, but not liquid. Experts advise mixing the mixture with a mixer.

Ingenious papier-mâché sculptures from egg trays (video)

Using the papier-mâché technique, you can make almost anything - from a Christmas tree decoration to a lighting fixture, which will not differ at all from being exquisite and expensive.

Hello! Today Masha and I will tell you about papier-mâché, and also outline our homemade technology for making papier-mâché from egg trays. I would like to note right away that according to our recipe today, the papier-mâché mass turns out to be coarse-grained. And the surface of the products is deliberately rough. Here, for example, you can see the products that we make from such a mass. This technology is ideal for decoupage, furniture fittings, and possibly fruit.

However, to obtain a smooth mass, you just need to add one item to our recipe: after squeezing, grind everything with a food processor or mixer. I'll add a note about this at the appropriate place in the recipe.

Well, I’ll implement a couple more ideas using this papier-mâché technique and, perhaps, I’ll begin to master smooth papier-mâché.
For now, let’s share what we have already mastered well.
Let's start with a short review.

Papier-mâché - what is it?

and what do you eat it with?

Papier-mâché - what kind of foreign word is this?
The word papier-mâché came to us from French. It literally means “chewed paper.”
And this term refers to a soft and plastic, quickly hardening mass made of paper and glue, or similar materials.
Despite their European origins, the earliest papier-mâché products were found in excavations in China. And it was... Armor!
Yes Yes! In order for the armor to withstand the impact of an arrow or sword, the Chinese used multi-layer varnish coating. Despite everything, such armor was very light.
By the way, the first paper was also invented in China.

Nowadays they don’t make anything out of papier-mâché! And decorative interior elements, and toys and even... Furniture! But why be surprised, after the armor.

The technology for making papier-mâché varies.
From hearsay I know more or less about three or four types of such technologies. Or rather, I would divide the methods known to me into three groups, which differ fundamentally in the method of production and further use.

  • The first group is multi-layer papier-mâché

In this case, they take a ready-made form, for example, a mask. And newspaper or paper layers are applied to this form, alternating with glue.

  • The second group is a product made from papier-mâché mass.

This mass is obtained from cardboard or paper and glue. I would also divide this group into subgroups. Because such a mass happens to be made liquid and poured into, again, a ready-made form.
In the second case, the mass is brought into the state of plasticine. And then they shape it with their hands, special tools and molds. Masha and I will tell you about this method today.

  • Well, there is a third method, which is not entirely clear to me, in which a press and cardboard are used. I can’t say anything about it, except that there is such a method.

Mass of papier-mâché made from eggs

DIY trays - our recipe

We will need

  • Egg trays

Like these ones

Or big ones - three dozen. By the way, in my opinion, larger ones soak better. We usually transfer about four to six large trays at a time. Fill the pan full. It turns out with a reserve. Store in the refrigerator.

  • PVA glue - a liter, or two at a time. To avoid running.

  • Acrylic putty. And such a small jar will last for a long time.

Let's get started

  1. We remove unnecessary paper and other labels from small cells. They definitely won't get wet.
    We tear the cells into small pieces. Just like Masha.
  2. Place in a saucepan and add boiling water. So that everything is covered with water.
  3. Leave it for a day or two.
    When, on the fifth day, we suddenly stumble over a huge pan across the aisle, we are puzzled by how to squeeze it all out.
    We first press with our hands. You get such lumps.
  4. Pour the rest into a colander. And also - into lumps.
  5. Then we spin it out in the washing machine (just don’t tell our dad that). It turns out like this.
    THAT'S WHY! I highly recommend purchasing a large mesh bag for washing clothes. There are such things. Then you won’t have to collect scraps all over the drum.
  6. Here, if you want to get a smooth papier-mâché, you need to chop it all in a food processor until the chicken turns into a blender.
    Next we move on to the next point.
  7. Pour glue and mix.
    If you have accomplished point nine, then you don’t have to strain yourself too much. Knead your dough until you decide the consistency is exactly what you want. In our case, we need to knead it for a long time, gradually adding glue. And I advise you to save your strength and patience for this point.
    Frankly, every time I do this, there is a moment when I think “no, something is wrong this time! It doesn’t stir!” And every time I pull myself together, continue further and the next moment comes when the trousers turn... That is... The pieces turn into mass! Like this one. So Masha is tired. I tried really hard!
    And she asked me to make a frog. At this stage, the frog does not mold well. The mass is not quite ready yet.
  8. After mixing, I usually leave it for several hours. Then I stir again. If I’m not going to sculpt it right away, I put it in the refrigerator.
  9. If it’s time to sculpt, then add acrylic putty to the part of the mass intended for sculpting. Not much. A couple of tablespoons. They say that the putty makes the mass more uniform. It seems that this is how it is.
    I'm in the way. And, as a rule, especially if after the refrigerator, I leave it to stand.
    I am waiting for the condition of the papier-mâché mass to be suitable for a specific product.
    So, if you want to put it in a mold, then it can be liquid. But, if you want to make something that should hold its shape on its own and not drip, then a thicker consistency is needed.

That seems to be all that Masha and I wanted to tell about our technology for making papier-mâché from egg trays.

From such seemingly inconspicuous-looking waste material as egg trays, you can make very beautiful objects. Once you make one craft, you will stop throwing egg trays in the trash. The first thing you can try to do with your children is tulips. By cutting the tray into cells, you will get an almost finished tulip; all that remains is to slightly correct its shape, paint it and make a stem if necessary.

For painting it is better to use acrylic-based paints. Flowers without stems are used to decorate home furnishings, cards, invitations, etc.

Roses from their trays

You can also make roses. How to make a rose craft from a tray with your own hands? The answer is very simple. To do this you need to prepare:

  • egg cartons;
  • scissors;
  • green corrugated paper;
  • paints and brush;
  • glue or glue gun.

Step 1. Divide the tray into cells (cones) using scissors. Make four cuts on each piece. The result is a blank of four petals. For one flower you need four of them.

Step 2. Open the cone and process the edges of the petals: give them a rounded shape, cutting off sharp corners. Do this with all the blanks.

Step 3. Make cuts on each part towards the center, this will simplify the process of gluing the flower. Using a wooden stick or the handle of a brush, you can curl the edges of each workpiece.

Step 4. Paint the blanks in any color you like. To add naturalness, the centers of the petals can be painted with a lighter tone. Allow the workpiece to dry.

Step 5. Gently bend the tips of two opposite petals in half and glue them together as if the bud is closed. Glue another pair of petals to this base.

Step 6. Do the same with the second and third workpiece. And we cut the fourth into separate petals and glue them to the resulting bud. The master class on making roses from trays is completed.

With the resulting roses you can decorate a ready-made photo frame or create your own. In the center of a rectangular cardboard base you need to glue a photo, leaving a few centimeters at the edges. Empty edges are filled with flowers. You can make a wreath for the door in the same way.

Crafts with children

Paper egg cartons are great for crafts with kids. You don’t mind throwing them away if things don’t work out. But this activity develops perseverance and stimulates creative imagination.

An interesting option for crafts with young children is a caterpillar (centipede). To make it, you need to cut a row of 5-6 cells from the tray, paint it, decorate it with ribbons and threads. Antennae and paws can be made from chenille wire. A little imagination, bright colors and the toy is ready.

For those who like to draw, you can make a box for crayons. If you color the cells according to the colors of the crayons, you can kill two birds with one stone. There will be a place to store crayons, as well as the ability to sort them by color, while developing logical thinking in children.

The cell (cone) from the tray serves as the basis for creating various animals, birds and insects. You can make a penguin, a hare, a whale, a turtle, a ladybug, a chicken and much more that your imagination suggests.

Everything ingenious is simple. A tray for a dozen eggs is a ready-made base for a ship. We install the mast, sail and go!

From an egg carton you can make original boxes for jewelry or handicrafts. The boxes are first coated with white acrylic paint inside and out. Then they can be painted and covered with decoupage napkins.

Papier-mâché crafts

Many people use trays to create crafts using the papier-mâché technique. The boxes are crushed, soaked in water, mixed with glue (PVA, wallpaper, paste). It makes an excellent mass for modeling. Having collected a large number of trays, you can make a figure for the garden, etc.

On the Internet you can find a large number of photographs of crafts made from egg trays. They can be used as:

  • feeders;
  • a bouquet of flowers;
  • containers for growing seedlings;
  • boxes and much more.

You won't have the urge to throw egg cartons in the trash anymore. They can and should be used for creativity. Create beauty with your own hands!

Photos of crafts from egg trays

For a creative evening with your child, nika_po offers an interesting and exciting master class, or rather a lesson on making mushrooms from papier mache.

First of all, this lesson is interesting because the main material used is ordinary egg trays made of recycled paper, which must be soaked in water for a day in advance, but what papier-mâché masters can’t come up with.

So, in order to make such realistic mushrooms from ordinary egg trays, you should prepare the trays themselves, paste, PVA, corrugated paper, gouache paints, starch, semolina and wire.

As mentioned above, the trays should first be filled with water, for which hot water should be used.

Once you notice that the trays have begun to disintegrate, they should be torn into small pieces and left to further swell in water.

To turn the mixture into a more homogeneous mass, you should use a blender.

To remove excess liquid, squeeze the resulting mixture through gauze or a rag.

The result is an excellent mass for sculpting the necessary shapes from papier mache.

But this mixture is not quite ready yet, since it is necessary to add paste and PVA to the squeezed mass until the required texture for modeling is obtained.

The formation of a mushroom begins with a small ball, which we begin to roll in our hands.

To make the ball more even and smooth, you should use any round-shaped container.

The mushroom cap will turn out perfect if you throw the finished smooth ball as hard as you can onto the table surface.

Something like this should happen.

Here is another option to get a smooth surface of the cap. In this case, it should also be left to dry in this mold.

Again we form a second ball and make a mushroom stem out of it.

All parts should be thoroughly dried, which can be done on a battery in winter. Then we begin gluing the parts, starting with the leg. To do this, you should use crepe paper, but if the surface of the workpiece is not smooth, then pasting begins with toilet paper in as many layers as necessary to smooth the surface of the workpiece.

This is how the mushroom cap turned out in the end. We painted the outer part with matte, while the lower part remained covered with crepe paper.

What is stalemate, you ask? The pattern is obtained after combining starch, PVA and gouache of the desired color. The preparation of pata begins with mixing starch and glue to the desired consistency, after which the finished mixture is painted with gouache paint to the desired shade. When preparing pata, note that it is best to store it in a jar with a lid to prevent it from drying out.
