Is there beauty after gray hair? Highlighting on colored light, dark and red hair I did highlighting and I look like I’m gray

Highlighting on dark hair is a great way to liven up your hair color, add zest to your look, and without ruining your hair.

Let's figure out what highlighting dark hair is, what techniques and types there are, and also analyze the mistakes when choosing highlighting for dark hair.

Highlighting on dark hair- This is a method of dyeing individual strands to give the color versatility and depth. The shades are selected in such a way as to highlight the natural hair color and at the same time add volume and liveliness to the hairstyle.
The highlighting procedure appeared more than 10 years ago, but only recently has it become available to brunettes. This became possible thanks to the advent of innovative dyeing techniques and pigments that make it possible to give dark hair beautiful shades.

Shades that are ideal for highlighting on dark hair:

- cognac;
- copper;
- chocolate;
- coffee;
- caramel;
- nuts;
- honey.

The shade of the strands should be chosen depending on the original hair color. In order to get the effect of a beautiful expensive hair color, the strands should not be contrasting and stand out from the main mass of the hair. Differences of 1-2 tones are enough to make the hair look uniform, but at the same time new shades create depth of color.

Classic highlights for dark hair

Uniform coloring of strands along the entire length from roots to ends is called classic highlighting; this technique does not lose popularity from year to year and is a top procedure in a good salon.

For dark-haired girls, there are some nuances of highlighting using the classical technique:

1. The hair strands taken are very small (2-5 mm) so as not to get too contrasting a result.
2. After highlighting, you often have to resort to a tinting procedure to give the bleached strands a fashionable shade.
3. It is better to tint strands in muted shades as close as possible to the natural hair color.

Zonal highlighting on dark hair - a gentle coloring technique

When conducting zonal highlighting Only the top part of the hair is dyed, the rest of the hair remains untouched.

This coloring technology is suitable for girls with thin, not thick hair or for girls who doubt whether highlighting is suitable for them.

Advantages of zonal highlighting for dark hair:

The hair is practically not damaged, since the upper zone is dyed (for example, when carrying out classic highlighting, approximately 50% of the hair is dyed).
- you can get the effect of sun-bleached hair;
- if highlighting is not to your liking or does not suit you, it will be easier to return your original color;
If you wish, you can just lighten the strands framing your face a little, this will undoubtedly refresh the image.

Of the minuses It can be noted that you will have to part your hair in one place so that the bleached strands are visible.

Bronzing for dark hair

This technique is also called multi-color highlighting. When dyeing, several shades close to the main hair color are selected, usually these are nut, honey, caramel, chocolate, and coffee shades.

Thanks to BRONDE coloring the effect of soft iridescence of the hair is created; if the bronding procedure for dark hair is performed correctly, then you will get your own unique shade.

The peculiarity is that it does not have clear boundaries, the color is shaded as much as possible and selected within 2-3 related tones.

At first glance, you may not notice that your hair has been dyed in several tones, but at the same time the image will become more impressive, the hair color will be more expensive, and your face will be more expressive.

Ombre for dark hair

A hit of the 2015-2016 season, of course. There are different techniques and types of ombre, you can choose the one that suits you.
Ombre is an excellent option for those who want to keep their hair healthy; it can be done only at the ends, and the coloring can be renewed much less frequently than, for example, classic highlighting.

This may be a slightly perceptible shift of color towards the tips or, on the contrary, a contrasting transition from dark to light shade. The classic version of ombre is two-tone hair coloring with a smooth transition of color from dark to light. There is also a similar dyeing technique, thanks to which the effect of sun-bleached hair is achieved.

If you do not want drastic changes in appearance, then choose a shade as close as possible to your color, the transition will be soft, but this change will certainly refresh your hairstyle.

Ombre looks very impressive on dark hair with light ends, but be prepared that this is a rather aggressive hair procedure.

For extraordinary and brave girls, bright Ombre is suitable; they look great on dark hair. red, ginger, eggplant shades for ombre.

Coloring for dark hair

Coloring is the dyeing of individual strands of hair in different shades (usually 2-3 shades are selected, but some stylists do it chic with a large number of colors.

The difference between coloring and highlighting is that when coloring, individual strands are lightened and then dyed to the desired shade, while when highlighting, the strands simply acquire a lighter shade.

Coloring for dark hair has a wide range of shades and colors, they can be either natural (chestnut, cognac, honey, dark chocolate) or bright (red, red, purple, etc.).

Highlighting on black hair

When highlighting black hair, you need to be very careful, because you can not only ruin your hair, but also make the image vulgar.

Highlighting black hair should be done by an experienced colorist; shades should be chosen in a cold range; bronze and currant colors, coffee, copper, and dark brown shades are suitable.

On black hair, you can perform a bronzing procedure, thanks to this you can create an interesting shade of hair with different tints of color.

Blonding - or how to use highlighting to turn from a brunette to a blonde

The purpose of bleaching is a gradual transition from dark to light hair color, while the hair has a beautiful uneven shade, in contrast to complete lightening of the hair.

You need to be prepared for the fact that bleaching dark hair is a long and complex process; the desired effect can only be achieved after several lightening and toning procedures.

The advantage of this procedure is that you can choose any shade in a light range (wheat, beige, golden, platinum, etc.)

The downside is that it’s a lot of stress for your hair, it can suffer significantly, and your hair may become brittle and dry.

California highlighting

Another gentle technique for coloring dark hair is. This method of highlighting does not involve use, so it is ideal for dark hair.

The peculiarity of Californian (Venetian) highlighting is that the hair at the roots remains dark, and along the length there is a soft transition of color to a lighter one.

Partial highlights on dark hair

The name speaks for itself; with partial highlighting, only individual strands or ends of the hair can be colored to create the effect of flames.

Partial highlighting is suitable for girls who want to refresh their hair without radical changes; contrasting strands can add zest to the look. Partial highlighting is also done on the strands framing the face, especially for dark-haired girls this option looks impressive.

Salt and pepper - a fashion trend in coloring

This technique is controversial for many, but in 2016 stylists paid special attention to it. It requires special professionalism from the colorist, because the main thing is not to get the effect of gray hair.

If you have ashy dark brown hair, then this type of highlighting may be suitable for you.

  1. First: it will look great on curls of any length.
  2. Second: highlighting will highlight the hairstyle of both a young girl and an elderly lady. Based on this, we can say with confidence that this procedure is suitable for gray hair.

If gray hair is just starting to appear, it can be hidden with regular highlighting. Well, in the case when gray hair is spreading all over the hair, a technique called “Salt and Pepper” is appropriate.

Photos before and after

Highlighting is a convenient and safest way to highlight gray hair. Professional stylists recommend doing this procedure using shading. However This method is not suitable for all gray-haired women.

In order for unstable tint products to be applied to the strands, the highlighting must be healthy and not harsh, and the number of gray strands should not exceed 30% of the total hair mass. Tinting products can add brightness and saturation to the natural color, and gray strands will be slightly lighter than the rest. This method will create an interesting play of color and allow you to rejuvenate your face.

Remember! Tint products should be as close as possible in tone to the natural hair color.

To date there are many highlighting techniques. Thanks to this diversity, every girl can create her own unique look, but some types of coloring are not suitable for everyone.

So we can say with confidence that some dyeing techniques will not look at all on gray hair. Here you need to take into account that gray hair can be both light and dark. Therefore, you should choose a technique depending on the shade of your natural hair.

Important! For help in choosing shades, you should only contact trusted hairdressers. Otherwise, you may ruin your hairstyle.

The effect of coloring primarily depends on the correct choice. Even if the hair is a little With gray hair, the shade is selected based on the original hair color:

Color options

You can decorate gray hair not only with a well-chosen shade, but also with the right length of curls. So Perfect for women with long and medium dark hair:

  • Venetian highlighting. In this case, dark strands are dyed with a slight indentation from the roots. The result of this technique is strands that are slightly faded under the sun;
  • coloring shatush Suitable for any length. Sometimes the result of this technique is barely noticeable, because it seems as if the sunbeams are playing in your hair;
  • ombre technique It will also look great on hair of any length. Ombre is a transition from a lighter tone at the roots to a darker tone at the ends. This technique will allow you to beautifully highlight gray strands at the roots, as well as leave natural color at the ends. This technique will look best on dark hair.
  • Don’t forget that the type of highlighting should be chosen depending on the number of gray strands. If the gray hair has only slightly touched the temples or the back of the head, it can be beautifully disguised. But for those whose hair is completely shrouded in gray, there is an excellent technique called “salt-pepper.”

    The name of this technique speaks for itself. It represents a smooth transition from a light gray shade (salt) to black tones (pepper). It is perfect for those ladies who have most of their hair gray. Thanks to the right combination of gray and black strands, it will be completely invisible.

Attention! This coloring technique is so popular that it is used not only by older ladies, but also by middle-aged women who want to look stylish.

Technologies

Highlighting gray strands is done in four different ways. Choose the one that suits you directly.

Let's look at one of the options more specifically. Because highlighting on foil is the most common, let's go a little deeper into the details of this procedure.

  1. First of all, you need to prepare your work area, remove all unnecessary items, and cut the foil.
  2. It is best to start coloring with a parting. Use the thin tip of a comb or a special hook to pull out a strand and place it on the foil.
  3. Now you need to treat the strand with a coloring solution.
  4. After applying the paint, the strand must be completely wrapped in foil so that the paint does not transfer to other curls.
  5. A similar procedure should be repeated with each strand, at equal distances.

    Remember! The back of the head should be painted last.

  6. The dye should be left on the curls for 20 to 50 minutes, depending on the recommendations indicated on the package.
  7. After removing the foil, rinse your hair thoroughly with shampoo. In addition, you can apply balm to them.

That's all. The foil highlighting procedure is completely completed. Everything turned out to be not as difficult as it seemed at first.

Important! If gray hair appears only in a specific part of the head: the back of the head, the sides, etc. then before the highlighting procedure it is necessary to even out the color.

How long does the result last?

This coloring lasts much longer than regular hair coloring. The fact is that gray hair and growing roots are not so noticeable during highlighting, so the procedure should be repeated much less often.

We should not forget that you can extend the life of your hairstyle. To do this, you need to use shampoos and balms for colored hair, hide your beautiful strands during the scorching sun, severe frost, try to wash your hair as little as possible so that the dye does not wash out.

Possible mistakes

Most often, mistakes during highlighting occur when the procedure is carried out independently, at home. However, sometimes hairdressers make some mistakes.

Yes, most A common mistake is choosing the wrong tone. The hairstyle in this case looks very ugly, and sharp transitions are striking. Fixing this is not always easy or safe. If the result of home highlighting looks really ugly, stylists will suggest repeating the procedure to even out the shades.

However, this may not be safe for your hair at all. The dye, no matter what it is, negatively affects the structure of the hair, dries it out and makes it brittle. That is why the staining procedure cannot be carried out too often.

One more A common mistake is uneven strand width. This problem will also have to be corrected by repeating the procedure. In this case, the strands can only be made thicker. Their width will depend on the widest curls on your head.

The different width of the indentation from the roots is also very noticeable, especially on hair of dark shades. You can correct the situation in any beauty salon. During the correction, the stylist will try to align the indentation in the root zone as much as possible.

How to fix?

Sometimes even some masters get absolutely terrible results. If you have had unsuccessful highlighting, or you simply don’t like the result, The best option would be to dye your hair. However, this is not at all easy to do because due to the different shade of the curls, the new color will fall unevenly, and this will only aggravate the situation.

If you want to correct the results of unsuccessful highlighting, it is best to contact a salon where experienced hairdressers work. They know how to turn the situation to your advantage. First, you need to dye the lightest strands in darker colors to even out the overall shade of your hair, and then you can completely recolor all the strands.

Rules of care

In order for your hair to always look beautiful, you need to provide it with proper care. It will allow you to maintain not only a beautiful appearance, but also healthy hair.

It should be remembered that after such a procedure, the hair requires much more attention than even after regular dyeing. After highlighting, you may even feel that your curls have become weaker and thinner than they were before. In order to maintain their health, it is recommended to use various masks and balms marked “for colored hair.”

If you do not have the opportunity to purchase nourishing masks or balms, you can prepare your own from the ingredients that you find in your own kitchen. For example, prepare a nourishing mask from eggs or wash your strands with chamomile decoction.

In order for your hair to remain beautiful for much longer, try to avoid re-coloring until it is completely restored.

Conclusion

The highlighting procedure is very multifaceted. It will help not only hide gray hair, but also highlight it favorably. So, dear women, gray hair is not a death sentence. This is another opportunity to look original!

If gray hair only makes men look good, then for women its appearance becomes a real tragedy. To hide age-related changes from strangers, experts recommend beautifully coloring your strands. The best option would be highlighting for gray hair - a fresh, original and rejuvenating solution.

Features of the procedure

Is it possible to highlight gray hair? It is possible, but only if the amount of gray hair does not exceed 40%. This is the only way to get the expected effect - all the white hairs will be hidden behind the total mass of multi-colored hair.

Highlighting on gray hair is performed in four ways:

  • Using a cap is a classic method that is considered somewhat outdated and is used only on short hair. The process is very labor-intensive and quite lengthy - a special rubber cap dotted with many small holes is put on the client’s head. Using a hook, strands are pulled through them, onto which a coloring composition is then applied.
  • Using foil is a more modern method that allows you to color medium and long hair with high quality. In this case, individual curls are smeared with a coloring composition and wrapped in foil.

  • Using a comb - this method is suitable for any length. When using it, paint is applied to the teeth of a comb (they should be quite sparse) and combed from roots to ends.
  • Hand highlighting (“frosting” or “glazing”) is most often used on curly or curly hair (both long and short). With this type of highlighting, the paint is applied in such a way as to emphasize the natural vibrancy of the hair and give it additional volume.

Of course, highlighted hair needs to be constantly tinted. The procedure will need to be repeated no later than in 3-4 months. You shouldn’t delay it any longer - your hair will be untidy.

Advice! If gray hair is actively visible only in one area (the back of the head, temples or forehead), you need to even out the shade. To do this, the problem area is first painted with a base color, and only then highlighted.

Advantages of the method

Those who regularly highlight gray hair have never regretted their decision, because this procedure has several important advantages:

  • Gentle effect - does not affect the roots, is carried out only on individual strands;
  • No age restrictions - suitable for both young girls facing the first manifestations of “growing up” and mature ladies;
  • Versatility - can be performed on hair of any length;
  • Giving hair extra fullness and volume.

Types of highlighting gray hair

Have you decided to change your image and are already rushing to the salon? There they can offer you the following highlighting options for gray hair.

Salt and pepper

The name “salt and pepper” speaks for itself - it represents a smooth transition from light gray (salt) to black (pepper) tone. This is the only right solution for those who have gray hair covering most of their hair. Thanks to the stylish combination of light and dark strands, it will become invisible. This option can be safely used on hair dyed in an ashy tone.

Advice! Salt and pepper looks so unusual that it is happily used not only by mature ladies, but also by middle-aged women who do not yet suffer from a lot of gray hair, but who love to experiment with their appearance.

Classic highlighting

To effectively hide a small amount of gray hair, use classic highlighting. By this we mean uniform coloring of the hair along the entire length. The width of the strands can be varied. But remember one thing - to make your hair look more natural, choose the thinnest strands possible. In this case, the difference between the dyed curls and the base color is almost invisible.

Highlighting with edging

Gray highlighting with edging involves highlighting a zone of 1-2 cm along the marginal hairline. To dye such a edging, use dye of any color; the rest of the hair is simply highlighted in the usual way.

Important! When choosing shades for highlighting, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the color type (skin + hair + eyes). It is advisable to choose tones that are close to your native color. Then the gray hair growing at the roots will not be so noticeable.

Tips to help you choose the most beautiful highlights for gray or graying hair:

Contraindications to the procedure

There are a number of cases in which highlighting is simply impossible. We can include among them:

  • The use of natural dyes - henna or basma. If you have constantly tinted your hair with these products, changing your color to a different color will be quite problematic. Natural pigments penetrate so deeply into the hair structure that it is almost impossible to remove them from there;
  • Thin, damaged hair - as a result of dyeing, it can break off even in the middle of the length;
  • Pre-dyeing in dark chestnut or black. Most likely, only the root zone will be colored, and the rest of the length will remain unchanged.

There is only one way out here - be patient and wait until your shade grows, and also get serious about restoring the strands.

Important! If you are thinking about how to do highlighting on gray hair at home, we hasten to give you advice - coloring of completely gray hair can only be done by a good hairdresser. Otherwise, the strands may acquire a yellowish or even red tint.

How to properly care for highlighted curls?

For your hair to look as beautiful as in these photos, it needs to be properly cared for. A list of the most important rules can help you with this.

  • Rule 1. To wash your hair, use cosmetics (shampoos and balms) marked accordingly.
  • Rule 2. Secure their effect with indelible fluid gels. The substances included in their composition smooth out colored hair, give it a bright shine, emphasize contrast and maintain lipid balance.
  • Rule 3. Don’t forget about folk remedies. Once a week, lubricate your hair with any vegetable oil - corn, olive, burdock or sunflower. After 1-1.5 minutes, rinse off the oil mask with shampoo - the curls will become shiny, smooth and manageable.
  • Rule 4. Do not comb wet hair - this will cause it to stretch and become thinner.
  • Rule 5. Limit the use of irons, curlers and other thermal devices.
  • Rule 6. Regularly rinse your hair with chamomile decoction - it will allow the highlights to remain bright and eliminate unwanted yellowness. An alternative would be a special tonic with a small percentage of oxidizing agent (1.5-1.9%). It gently colors the strands and does not harm their structure.
  • Rule 7. Lightened curls, deprived of protection in the form of natural pigments, do not tolerate weather conditions well. To protect them from frost and heat, wear hats and regularly use anti-ultraviolet products.
  • Rule 8. Do not rub your wet head with a towel - give preference to natural drying of the strands. This takes longer, but does not harm their structure.
  • Rule 9. If you cannot do without a hairdryer, direct the air flow along the hair growth. This will allow the scales to close and enhance the gloss effect.
  • Rule 10. Do not resort to highlighting on gray hair ahead of schedule - although this procedure is considered gentle, you should not get carried away.

The nature of all living things is such that over time the body begins to age and fade. Man experiences the signs of aging much more than any other creature, especially the fair half. When hair loses pigment and begins to turn gray, a woman tries in every possible way to hide it, because it is absolutely impossible to stop the process. Today we will talk about how to choose which brand. We will also share the secrets of how you can embellish gray hair with highlights and create a stunning look.

Which paint should I choose?

There is no greater problem for a woman, that is, there wasn’t, because now there are special products that can paint over curls that are devoid of pigment, fill them with their own and hold them for a relatively long time. Paints from brands such as Estelle and the American Matrix are gaining more and more fans.

Both products are good and do their job perfectly without damaging the hair, since they do not contain harmful ammonia. And yet, “Matrix” can only work on those curls that are more than half bleached. "Estelle" can also be used on unbleached hair.

Estelle dye for gray hair: palette and features

The Russian company Estel has developed a special product suitable for gray hair. "Lux Silver" is a line of dyes that can effectively and softly hide gray hair, give your curls vibrant color, softness and shine. With consistent use of this product, you will be able to forget about gray hair forever, because Estel Professional is able to cover it one hundred percent. The palette consists of seven primary colors and more than 150 natural shades.

Although coloring is recommended in a professional salon, the paint from this manufacturer is quite easy to use at home. The main thing is to follow the instructions prescribed by the manufacturer, otherwise you can achieve a very different shade from what was stated on the packaging.

Palette of colors for gray hair:

  • brown medium (brown 4/**);
  • light brown (light brown 5/**);
  • dark blond (light brown 6/**);
  • medium blond (light brown 7/**);
  • light blond (light brown 8/**);
  • bright blond (blonde 9/**);
  • light blond (10/**).

Each range is presented in several shades, and a woman, regardless of her hair color, will be able to choose the tone she likes. It is worth noting that shade number 9/65 is suitable only for hair that has completely lost its pigment - at least 90% gray. All of the shades are suitable for highlighting gray hair. As for the black color, we will tell you in the further content of the article.

Instructions for use

If it is important for you to get an even tone, then follow the rule when choosing a tone for gray hair: it should not differ too much from your natural color, the difference should be no more than two tones. If absolutely all of your curls are “silver”, take a tone that matches your hair color one hundred percent.

When diluted, Estelle paint does not have an unpleasant odor; on the contrary, it has a rather light and delicate aroma. The product fits perfectly, enveloping the strand, and does not flow as it is applied. Before use, it is necessary to conduct a sensitivity test to avoid becoming a victim of an allergy.

  1. Wear protective gloves and mix the product in a non-metallic bowl.
  2. Apply with a brush to each strand - from roots to ends. Hair should be dry and unwashed.
  3. Leave the cream on your curls for 45 minutes. A plastic cap won't be useful, but it won't do any harm either. In it you can safely stain the upholstery of a sofa or chair and enjoy watching a movie.
  4. Rinse your hair under running water until it becomes clear.
  5. Apply a color fixing balm and wash it off after 5 minutes.
  6. If highlighting is done on gray hair, the holding time is reduced to 35 minutes.

If you have doubts when choosing a shade, then contact a hairdresser at the salon, he will professionally select the ideal tone for your hair. You can carry out subsequent procedures at home yourself, just remember to ask your hairdresser for the shade number.

Short hair

If you have a fashionable short haircut and your hair is completely gray, then you can decorate it instead of coloring it. Nowadays, gray hair is becoming more and more fashionable, and meeting a young lady with such curls is not uncommon. Ombre for short hair is perfect for you. It is unlikely that you will be able to paint yourself, so contact a professional. He will select a shade of ash or gray (possibly black) and create the perfect color for your curls. It will look like this: from a darker ashy shade (gray or black) at the roots, the color will smoothly turn into silver. This ombre looks amazing on both short and long hair.

Highlighting on gray hair

If you have no more than 40% gray hair, then choose regular highlighting. It will help hide the signs of fading and add additional volume, since curls devoid of pigment become thin, and the hair generally looks watery. Choose shades close to the natural color, this will help avoid contrast when the roots grow.

"Salt and pepper"

This is an unusual black highlighting for gray hair. Women will like it because it is bright, self-confident, suitable for medium length and long curls. This hair coloring - black highlights - is suitable for women who have gray hair making up the majority of their hair. Also ideal for girls whose curls are ash-colored.

As professionals note, highlighting gray hair with individual strands is ineffective, since the result may be unexpected, that is, the hair may turn yellow or even red. That is why “Salt and Pepper” is offered to those with completely gray hair.

Features of staining

Black highlighting using this method is unusual. The result will be a color that smoothly transitions from completely white (salt) to black (pepper). The goal is a harmonious juxtaposition of two opposite colors, the border between which is blurred and almost invisible. It is not possible to create such an image at home, so contact a professional salon. With the help of this hair coloring - highlighting black on silver curls, you will be able to create an elegant, feminine and interesting image, as well as add brightness and extravagance to your style. Such a woman will never remain in the shadows and will walk like an ice queen.

Caring for Dyed Gray Hair

Gray curls, especially after hair dyeing or highlighting, require special care, because they become thinner, dry out and look tired. If it is not possible to purchase an expensive product, do not despair, because every housewife has vegetable oil in her kitchen, be it olive or sunflower. Once a week, an hour before washing your hair, apply it to the entire length of your curls and put on a plastic cap. It can be easily washed off with warm water and shampoo. Such masks will help maintain shine, softness, elasticity and volume of hair.

Marina Nikitina

Graying is a physiologically inherent process in the body that occurs in the hair as old age approaches. Gray hair is a sign of venerable age and wisdom. From time to time, beautiful silver gray hair comes into fashion; for some people, silver hair color suits them.

Men, according to statistics, go gray earlier than women, but are less likely to worry about it. To look younger, women paint over whitish hairs, strands or their entire hair. The more silver hair on your head, the more pressing the question of how to cover gray hair becomes.

What is gray hair

The color of gray hair and the age at which it appears is influenced by genetics, as well as lifestyle and quality of life. In some families, people go gray very early, while in others they maintain their hair color until old age. How quickly a person goes gray is influenced by stress and bad habits (especially smoking).

Every person with a set of genes is given a hair color from their mom and dad. Color is a combination of two melanin pigments (eumelanin and pheomelanin) within each hair. The less coloring pigment, the more colorless, whiter the hair.

Gray hair is an almost complete absence of melanin, discoloration of hair from the inside.

Gray hair is less noticeable on blondes than on brunettes. Gray color can have yellowish, gray shades or be pure, depending on how much melanin is still left in the hair.

When melanin stops being produced and filling the hair structure, voids form in it. These voids are the cause of poor gray coverage. When there is enough melanin in the hair, when dyeing, the artificial pigment of the dye interacts with the natural pigment found in the hair. When there is no natural pigment in the hair, the dye simply has nothing to interact with.

How then does dye for gray hair work and how to choose a dye that is sure to cover gray hair?

Firstly, not any paint can cover gray hair. Natural blondes tend to have thin and soft hair, while brunettes tend to have coarse and dense hair. Accordingly, it is more difficult for brunettes to “hide”. A soft natural dye can cover a small amount of gray hair. If the hair is completely gray and coarse (this type of gray is called “vitreous”), it is necessary to carry out pre-pigmentation or mordensage before dyeing.

Secondly, each hair has a cuticle. This is the outer hair sheath that protects the inner part of the hair. On the one hand, the cuticle protects the hair from the penetration of artificial dye inside, on the other hand, it does not allow it to be washed if it is already inside.

If the hair cuticle is thick and its scales fit tightly to each other, the hair is practically not amenable to the dyeing procedure (along with curling and styling). When the cuticle is thin and its scales are open, hair can be dyed easily and quickly. The dye must be selected individually, based on the hair type.

Ways to cover gray on dark hair

Depending on the amount of gray hair a brunette has and its type, hairdressers choose one of the methods:

If there is a little gray hair on your head,... The paint that covers gray hair is selected in light shades and applied directly to the gray strands. Natural hair is colored as needed to ensure that the overall highlights look beautiful.

The advantages of highlighting: regrown hair roots are less noticeable, the negative impact of dye is minimized (since not all hair is dyed, but only part of it), the image is transformed. Disadvantages of this method of “hiding” gray hair: as the number of gray hairs increases, highlighting will become ineffective.

To cover gray hair on brunettes, use a mixture of henna and basma of the highest quality. To get black hair color, henna and basma powder are taken in a ratio of one to two (tablespoons) and mixed thoroughly. Pour in hot water (but not boiling water), rub with a wooden spoon until it becomes a not very liquid sour cream. Apply part by part to dry, clean hair, as with regular hair coloring. Leave the dye on your head for one and a half to three hours, wrapping your head in a plastic bag and a towel. The longer the natural dye remains on the hair, the darker the color will be.

If you mix henna with a decoction of strong black tea, you will get a chestnut shade of hair. Henna gives a mahogany shade. You need to be careful with basma, as it can give your hair a steel-green tint.

There is no need to be ashamed of gray hair. But if you want to paint over it, among the possible ways to do this there is a suitable one.
