President of Russian Federation
V. PUTIN

Moscow Kremlin

On this holiday, all workers in this industry accept congratulations from colleagues, friends, superiors and officials of various ranks. Light industry veterans are also honored. After all, it is thanks to the hard work of these people that we have the opportunity to buy high-quality domestically produced products.

Light industry enterprises employ mainly representatives of the fair sex. They produce a wide variety of consumer goods. Small enterprises and private entrepreneurs who sew clothes in small batches and to individual orders, make special clothing and travel equipment are gaining more and more weight in the industry’s production volumes.

Many light industry enterprises are pursuing an active marketing and sales strategy, which helps them expand their presence both in the local market and in other regions of Russia. Depending on consumer demand and changes in the economic situation, the range of products expands and changes dramatically, production is diversified, and new advanced technologies are introduced.

Textile and light industry

Many Russian light industry enterprises are currently, unfortunately, going through difficult times. Private entrepreneurs and small businesses are becoming increasingly important in terms of industry production volumes.

Today, this industry faces new important challenges. The problem of increasing the competitiveness of manufactured products, as well as the investment attractiveness and professionalism of personnel has become very urgent.
It is the textile and light industry that provides us with everything we need in everyday life. The country needs their products; a huge number of Russians work in this industry - more than 2 million people. One of the features of this industry is the fact that its enterprises employ mainly women.

This industry accounts for more than 40% of all non-food consumer goods. Today, light industry plays a fairly significant role in relations between the CIS countries. These countries regularly exchange not only raw materials, but also semi-finished and finished products. Products for industrial purposes are also produced.

The industry is engaged in the production of a variety of consumer goods, producing clothing, shoes, hosiery, underwear, fabrics, etc.

It is no secret that domestically produced clothing, shoes and other similar goods are cheaper than the same goods imported from other countries. Thanks to the work of this industry, we have the opportunity to buy Russian clothes and shoes.

The products produced by the industry are of fairly high quality and are able to meet the needs of not only Russian but also foreign buyers. There is a gradual expansion and change in the range of products. This is due to consumer demand and changes in the economic situation in the country. However, so far things are not going too well. The light industry of our country suffered quite severely as a result of the economic crisis.

Production volume has decreased significantly. A major role in this was played by the shortage of raw materials, especially cotton, because it is not grown in our country. Russia is forced to import flax, wool, leather raw materials and chemical fibers.

Light industry is a complex industry that includes more than 20 sub-sectors. All of them can be combined into 3 main groups. The first group usually includes the textile industry. It includes: linen, wool, cotton, silk, knitting industries, etc. The second group includes the clothing industry, and the third includes the leather, fur and shoe industries. The textile industry is the leader among these industries in terms of indicators such as production volume and the number of workers employed in it. It includes: primary processing of raw materials, production of fabrics of all types, production of non-woven materials, as well as other similar products.

In our country in the 19th - early 20th centuries. textile production was the most developed industry. The distribution of textile industry enterprises was very uneven. More than 80% of all products were produced in the Central and Northwestern regions of the country.
After the collapse of the USSR, the Russian textile industry faced a very important issue regarding the raw material base. The country needed supplies from other CIS countries of such raw materials as cotton fiber, wool and natural silk threads.

For this reason, chemical fibers have come to the forefront of the industry's raw material balance. Currently, a huge number of products are produced with an admixture of chemical fibers. This helps reduce tension in supplying the industry with raw materials, but has a negative impact on the quality of manufactured products.

The leading branch of the textile industry is cotton. It provides more than 70% of all fabrics produced in our country.

Light industry is very closely connected with all sectors of the economy. Its strongest connection is with agriculture. The chemical industry also acts as a raw material base for light industry. It produces synthetic fibers, dyes and artificial leathers.

The meat industry supplies leather, and the mechanical engineering industry provides this industry with equipment. The fuel and energy sector ensures the uninterrupted operation of light industry enterprises.

It must be said that there are light industry enterprises in every economic region of Russia. However, there are also specialized areas in our country that have long been considered centers for the development of light industry. The main of these regions is the Central region, and within it are the Ivanovo and Tver regions. They specialize in the production of cotton products.
Production volume, unfortunately, continues to decline every year. The situation is particularly difficult in the textile industry. It is experiencing the greatest decline in production. The main reason for this can be called the lack of raw materials. Raw material prices are rising. This causes a fairly significant increase in prices for finished products. Therefore, domestic products in this industry become less competitive compared to imported goods.

Recently, the Government of the Russian Federation has been implementing a number of measures to economically support domestic producers of the textile and light industries. A number of resolutions have been adopted on temporary exemption from import duties on the most important types of technological equipment imported to modernize production, partial changes have been made to the regulations on customs duties on goods transported for personal use by individuals, issues of allocating funds from the federal budget to partially subsidize interest rates on loans received for seasonal purchases of raw materials and supplies. The Russian Union of Entrepreneurs of Textile and Light Industry stands guard over domestic interests.

In the list of honorary titles of Russia there is the title “Honored Worker of the Textile and Light Industry of the Russian Federation.”

What date is Light Industry Day: in 2017 it is celebrated on Sunday 11 June

Which countries celebrate: mandatory in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. This professional holiday is also celebrated in some other countries of the former USSR, but not on such a grand scale.

Who established Light Industry Workers Day: in Ukraine it was approved by the President by Decree of June 9, 1994 (No. 285/94)

Celebration traditions: Most often on this day, outstanding specialists are awarded, as well as fashion shows.

The Ukrainian climate means an impressive wardrobe: every average resident of the country has at least three seasonal sets of shoes and clothes in which you can feel comfortable outside in any weather. Ukrainians with above-average income most often prefer branded items, although many Ukrainian designers are in trend today. As for the majority of consumers, they are happy to purchase clothes from domestic factories and companies. Light Industry Day 2017 is dedicated to all employees of this industry. Today these are the following areas:

  • Garment industry (fur, haberdashery, footwear);
  • Textile industry (silk, cotton, knitwear, linen).

The main task of such enterprises in Ukraine is to quickly recoup the investment in them per day, to be distinguished by high mobility of production and prompt change of assortment depending on fashion trends.

history of the holiday

The factory industry appeared quite a long time ago: in the eighteenth century. This was facilitated by technical progress: special weaving looms and spinning machines appeared. So labor moved from manual to machine. And it is not surprising that the nineteenth century is a time when many enterprises developed at an incredibly rapid pace. Development was also facilitated by the fact that the factories were now staffed not by persecuted serfs, but by hired workers interested in results and earnings. Then a rather protracted economic crisis set in in this area, but after the war the enterprises started working with renewed vigor. In 1980, the Day of Textile and Light Industry Workers was solemnly approved. After the USSR collapsed, a huge flow of foreign products poured into the Ukrainian market, which practically supplanted domestic producers. However, active restoration and rebranding of many manufacturers is currently underway.

How is Light Industry Day celebrated in Ukraine?

Despite the fact that there are certain difficulties in the industry, this holiday is celebrated at every enterprise. Just imagine: in the country more than four hundred thousand people are involved in this field, and about eighty percent of them are women. It is not surprising that on the second Sunday of June, Seamstress Day in Ukraine, you can meet large groups of women in cafes and restaurants. There are no special celebration traditions: rallies and festivals have not been held since Soviet times. At the official level, today only awards are given to the best employees (both of the country and of an individual factory). Also on this day, employees, as a rule, receive well-deserved bonuses, after which they go to corporate events.

Some interesting facts

  • the largest jute factory in the country, which produces nets, bags, twines and rope, is located in Odessa;
  • The main centers of the knitting industry in the country are Lvov, Kyiv, Lugansk, Kharkov, Donetsk and Zhitomir. Here Tailor's Day is celebrated without fail;
  • the best shoes and leather are produced in Kyiv, Lvov, Zaporozhye and Nikolaev;
  • There are more than 200 professional educational institutions in Ukraine, where they train specialists for light industry.
  • The import of things from developed European countries into the country is not so high; the main supplies of fabrics, clothing and equipment come from Asian countries.

In the Russian climate, the average resident of the country must have at least three sets of clothes and shoes in order to comfortably move around the streets in any weather. People with high incomes, as a rule, prefer to wear clothes from foreign brands, but there are also many consumers from domestic light industry manufacturers. A professional holiday is dedicated to employees of this industry.

When is it celebrated?

Every second Sunday of June in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, Textile and Light Industry Workers' Day is celebrated. In 2020, the holiday falls on June 14th. In Russia, he copes in accordance with Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 1111 “On the Day of Textile and Light Industry Workers,” issued on June 17, 2000.

Who's celebrating

This is a professional holiday for those people who are directly related to this type of activity. The light industry of the Russian Federation employs approximately six hundred thousand people, of which about 80 percent are women. Numerous employees of clothing, shoe, leather, fur and other enterprises celebrate this date on a grand scale.

history of the holiday

This event has existed for more than 30 years. Light Industry Workers' Day was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated October 1, 1980 “On holidays and memorial days.” After the collapse of the Union, it was approved at the state level by the heads of the republics by separate decrees.

The Russian history of the development of light industry dates back to the 17th century. It was then that the first state linen and cloth factories began to appear, which clothed the inhabitants of pre-revolutionary Russia, mainly by serf workers. Then they were replaced by capitalist textile factories, where hired workers worked.

During the Soviet Union, light industry began to develop rapidly. Linen, wool, knitting and cotton mills appeared mainly in the central regions of the country. After the collapse of the USSR, the post-Soviet market opened up to imported goods, which led to a significant decline in domestic textile production.

About light industry in Russia

In the Russian Federation there are more than 15 thousand enterprises and organizations related to the textile and light industry, so the products of domestic factories can well satisfy the demand of their customers.

Today, the economic condition of Russian textile enterprises has stabilized, but many problems in the industry remain and hinder the further development of organizations. The demand for products is not great enough, many enterprises use outdated technological equipment, and employee salaries leave much to be desired. The huge share of illegally imported into the country and shady light industry products does not improve the situation either.

The most famous region producing light and textile products in Russia is the Ivanovo region. Local enterprises clothe and shoe the entire country and even export their products abroad.

Images from Valery Todorovsky’s film “Hipsters” very clearly demonstrated the state of light industry in the 50s of the last century. Faint identical fabrics, identical shoes, and only rare attempts to somehow decorate your life with the help of beautiful clothes. Now the situation has changed dramatically. Anyone can dress according to their taste and financial capabilities, and the credit for this goes not only to foreign manufacturers, but to workers in our domestic light industry. Not only large, but also many small enterprises are working to create beautiful, competitive products that customers would be happy to wear. As recognition of the importance of their work in the life of society, the Day of Light Industry Workers was established by order of the President in 2000, which is celebrated on the second Sunday in June.
