September 12 is Programmer's Day. Programmer's Day: what date is celebrated, what to give as a gift and how to congratulate a programmer. Who took part

Traditionally, at the beginning of September, residents of the Russian capital celebrate the birthday of their beloved city.

City Day in Moscow in 2019(or, for short, ) in accordance with Law number 56 of September 22, 2004 may be appointed on the first or second Saturday of September, depending on the decision of the city authorities.

Previously, the day of celebration of the Day of the Capital of Russia was always the first Saturday of September.

However, after the tragic events in Beslan in 2004, the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism was appointed on September 3, and the memorable date may also fall on Saturday. Holding festive events dedicated to Moscow Day simultaneously with such a tragic date is, of course, unacceptable. Also, the first Saturday of autumn may coincide with September 1 (Knowledge Day), which remains a holiday and is an important date for residents of the Russian Federation. On September 1, many thematic holiday events are traditionally planned throughout Moscow, which should not be combined with events dedicated to the celebration of City Day in Moscow. In this regard, it was decided to formalize the possibility of moving Moscow City Day to the second Saturday of September.

When is City Day in Moscow in 2019:

Due to the existing uncertainty (the fact that the date of the celebration can be set either on the first or second Saturday of September), residents and guests of the capital are interested in the question: when will Moscow Day be celebrated in 2019: September 7, 2019 or September 14, 2019.

Every year at the beginning of July, a decree of the Moscow Government is issued, which determines what date the city day will be in the capital of Russia.

Before its release, we can assume that Moscow Day 2019 will be celebrated on the first Saturday of September - September 7, 2019.

That is, City Day in Moscow in 2019 will be celebrated by:
*September 7, 2019.

Programmer's Day is a holiday of programmers, celebrated on the 256th day of the year. The number 256 (28) was chosen because it is the number of different values that can be expressed using an eight-bit byte. It is also the maximum integer power of 2 that does not exceed the number of days in a year (365 or 366).

In 2018, Programmer's Day falls on Thursday, September 13th.

The profession of a programmer is in demand in all areas of activity. Without it, innovative development and technological progress are impossible. Computer technologies accompany medicine, education, the service sector, and ensure the functioning of all sectors of the economy and the defense complex. The most complex, program-controlled equipment is created and improved by highly professional specialists who are able to think progressively and outside the box.

HISTORY OF THE HOLIDAY

The idea of celebrating “Programmer’s Day” was first announced by the head of the Computerra publishing house, Dmitry Mendrelyuk, on July 15, 1996. It was proposed to consider the first Friday of September, called “Clean Friday,” to be the programmer’s day. In 2002, employees of the Parallel Technologies web studio Valentin Balt and Mikhail Chervyakov organized a collection of signatures for an appeal to the Russian government in support of recognizing the 256th day of the year as an official holiday for programmers.

On July 24, 2009, the Ministry of Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation prepared and submitted to the Government of the Russian Federation a draft decree of the President of Russia “On Programmer’s Day”.

On September 11, 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed Decree No. 1034, prepared by the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation, which establishes a new official holiday in Russia - “Programmer's Day”.

The chair will breathe with a creaking spring.
You are a programmer, you hang out at the computer,
You solve all the algorithms in the problems,
But, on your holiday, rest a little,
And take a serious look at reality.

Hitting the keys "maestro"
Scales that are incomprehensible to everyone.
You're not playing with an orchestra,
And with a computer program!
From the heart on Programmer's Day
We wish you happiness!
Be an optimist in life

Throw away the keyboard, step away from the mouse,
Turn off the computer and hide your seats.

Programmer's Day is celebrated annually on September 13, and in leap years - on September 12. The date was not chosen by chance. This is actually the 256th day of the year.

That’s why Programmer’s Day in Ukraine 2016 falls on September 12, Monday, the busiest working day.

The number 256 is two raised to the eighth power, i.e. the number of values that can be expressed in one byte.

And a byte, as you know, is a very significant value for programming, a unit of storage and processing of digital information. In modern computing systems, a byte consists of eight bits and, accordingly, can take on one of 256 different values.

The idea of celebrating Programmer's Day was first proposed in 1996 by Dmitry Mendrelyuk, head of the Computerra publishing house. Then it was planned to celebrate this date on the first Friday of September and call it “Clean Friday”. So this year Programmer’s Day celebrates its 20th anniversary.

But a little later, in 2002, employees of the Parallel Technologies web studio Valentin Balt and Mikhail Chervyakov expressed an original idea to recognize the 256th day of the year as a holiday for programmers.

In Ukraine, as in many other countries, Programmer's Day is not considered an official holiday. Nevertheless, all people, one way or another connected with programming, happily congratulate each other on their professional holiday.

The date - the 256th day of the year - was chosen by the programmers themselves. 256 (two to the eighth power) is the number of numbers that can be expressed using an eight-bit byte and the maximum power of two that is less than 365 (days in a year).

The initiative to establish Programmer Day in Russia belongs to Valentin Balt, an employee of the Parallel Technologies company.

As part of the preparation of a draft document on the establishment of a professional holiday for programmers in Russia, specialists from the Ministry of Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation with the All-Russian Association of Trade Unions, as well as with the all-Russian associations of employers - the Association of Computer and Information Technology Enterprises (APKIT) and Russoft (an association of the largest and most influential companies - Russian software developers).

Before the official holiday appeared, Programmer's Day was celebrated on different days: July 19 - when the first programmer Ada Augusta Lovelace wrote the world's first program for a computer, December 10 - on Ada's birthday, April 4 (4.04), similar to the error "404" " ("this page was not found"). Another date was proposed for July 26, in honor of the first ever indictment of the creator of a computer virus.

In Russia, programmers also have their professional holiday on April 22, or 22.04. The emergence of this date is associated with the coding of specialty 220400 - “Computer software and automated systems.”

The first programmer is considered to be the mathematician Ada Augusta Lovelace, the daughter of the English poet George Byron. On July 19, 1843, she created the first program for her colleague Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. In the same year, she translated and annotated the article “Elements of Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine” by the Italian mathematician and engineer Luigi Federico Menabria. She also proposed using the Analytical Engine to solve the Bernoulli equation, which expresses the law of conservation of energy of a moving fluid.

None of the programs written by Ada Lovelace were ever created, but among programmers her name is immortalized - the universal programming language is called "Ada".

Among the world's famous programmers are the creator of the largest IT project of the 20th century - the Internet Tim Berners-Lee, one of the founders of Microsoft Bill Gates, creator of the C programming language and key developer of the UNIX operating system Dennis Ritchie, creator of the GNU operating system kernel /Linux Linus Torvalds, developer and co-founder of the Google search engine Sergey Brin, one of the world's leading experts in the field of information security Evgeny Kaspersky, creator of the world's most popular social network Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Yandex Ilya Segalovich, etc.

The Russian school of programmers today is worldwide and remains one of the best in the world. Russian programmers have always been highly valued abroad - the massive “brain drain” started back in the 1990s. Western companies owe much of their success and dominance in world markets to talented specialists from Russia.

The team of St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU) won the Association of Computing Machinery Association World Student Programming Championship (ACM-ICPC), (Phuket).

At the ICPC final, four medals of each value are awarded. The Russian teams have five medals out of 12, including two gold, two silver and one bronze. Gold medals went to the teams of St. Petersburg State University (first place, absolute championship) and MIPT (fourth place), silver medals from St. Petersburg ITMO University (seventh place) and Ural Federal University (eighth place), a bronze medal went to Nizhny Novgorod State University (10th place) place).

St Petersburg University students have already won the World Championship in 2000, 2001 and 2014. ITMO University (University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics) became the absolute champion of ACM ICPC in 2004, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2015.

Over the past three decades, the ICPC Championship has been the world's most prestigious intellectual competition for young programmers.

February 14th is not just about Valentines for Valentine's Day. Few people know, but on the same day, IT industry specialists celebrate their holiday - World Computer and Programmer Day. This professional holiday is unofficial, but it is celebrated by web designers, programmers, system administrators, service technicians and IT specialists of many other specialties around the world. We celebrate it on a smaller scale than abroad, but those who are associated with one of the computer professions, on this day, sum up their activities for the year and plan further progress along the path of improvement.

history of the holiday

It is interesting that the work on the development of the first computer was sponsored by the American army, which needed a computer for military calculations, planning and programming. ENIAC I operated until 23 hours 45 minutes on October 2, 1955, and then was dismantled. This holiday should not be confused with the Russian official Programmer's Day, which experts celebrate on September 13 - it has its own roots and its own history.

And World Computer Day began its march across the planet on February 14, 1946, when the world’s first computer, which was essentially a huge and perfect calculator for performing complex calculations for military orders, was shown to the general public in America. This device was called ENIAC, which means “electrical digital integrator and calculator.”

This machine became the direct ancestor of all modern computers, which have entered the everyday life of the vast majority of people on the planet. The evolution of computing technology took very little time. Many new, advanced technologies have appeared before our eyes, and we owe all this to computer scientists - servants of the multimillion-dollar IT industry, to whom this holiday is dedicated.
